What is Stereogram Texture

From a visual standpoint, a stereograms are created from vertically repeated image throughout its structure (see image, texture is repeating 10 times vertically). The algorithms employed in constructing stereograms adjust the vertical strip in each iteration to include 3D content.

Background strips within stereograms can feature random dots, text, or images. The prevalent choice in stereograms involves using images in the background, resulting in outcomes that are not only more visually appealing but also easier to discern compared to text or stereograms with random dots.

Aspect ratio of Stereogram texture image

You can use any aspect ratio of texture. If height of texture is less than result stereogram image, texture will be tiled vertically for each strip. Therefore, seamless textures are recommended at least in the vertical direction. Use long vertical texture strips if you want to make the content of the stereogram more interesting and not repeating.

Minimal width of Stereogram texture

Minimal width is recommended at least of separation stereogram distance. It can be calculated as value of result stereogram width divided by number of repeats/strips (usually from 7 to 12).  For size of full HD stereograms 1920 x 1980 pixels is result 1920 / 12 = 160 pixels width of texture. For smaller stereograms you need at least 100 pixels. If you want print high quality stereograms, use textures with a minimum width of 200 pixels. Stereogram software scales texture to correct width, but if the texture is not wider than the required width, the stereogram will not be sharp enough to display a 3D object in high details.

Seamless Stereogram texture

Seamless textures have the best effect because they eliminate sharp edges throughout the image. But there are applications like Stereogram Explorer, which can adjust the texture in horizontal direction and improve the resulting texture effect.

What textures works with Stereograms

Technically there are no limitations on texture content such as color, method of creation (hand drawing, painting, photo). What is decisive is texture detail and local contrast. The content of the texture depends on the detail requirements of the displayed 3D object. For detailed objects, textures with fine detail and high contrast are needed. Textures with diagonal objects or lines are working good and the same for textures with small objects or patterns. In the horizontal part of the image where there is no 3D object, mostly in the top and bottom part, there are no special requirements for texture content.

What textures NOT works with Stereograms

Textures with blank or large single color areas, horizontal or vertical lines are not recommended. Also textures that are too symmetrical horizontally are not recommended. There are no exact rules about which textures don’t work for stereograms. If the texture content is homogeneous, separate contrasting objects or distinct colored objects can have a adverse effect on the perception of the stereogram content.

Sometimes it can happen that for a simple 3D object, e.g. text, a texture is usable that doesn’t work for other content. Therefore, it is useful to try textures that may not work at first glance with other content.

Using a photo as a texture for a stereogram

If the photo contains enough details, small objects (flowers, leaves), textures, it is possible to use the selected part as a texture for stereograms. If you want to use the whole photo, then it will be vertically repeated in individual strips. Therefore it is possible to create a vertical collage of the photos and use it as a texture.

Stereogram Explorer software allows you to use any image including photos, select the appropriate part and adjust the magnification as needed.

What I need to create animated stereogram?

You only need 3DS model. Load 3DS model, set starting position and select animation properties. Animation will be rendered to AVI file. Now is supported only random-dot rendering. SIS (textured) stereograms are not good for animations. Human brain is not ‘ready’ for moving objects without textures.

What is textured (patterned) stereogram (SIS)?

Single Image Stereograms – Textured stereogram is created from tiled image and depth map. Recommended are asymmetric textures with good contrast and some small objects as stones, balls. You can find many free textures on Internet.

What is random-dot stereogram (SIRDS)?

Single Image Random Dot Stereograms – Random dot stereogram is image created from dots. It is older rending method. Random dot stereograms were created from black&white dots. Now are SIRDS colorful. You need only depth map for creating SIRDS. Drawback of random dot stereograms is that 3D shapes are not smooth and there are visible depth layers. Stereogram Explorer corrects this problem with light blur. There is not recommended use this rendering method. If you want to render dot stereogram, use dot texture for SIS method. Render SIRDS and use it as texture for SIS.

How to create stereograms for beginners?

You can use Stereogram Explorer to create easy visible stereograms for beginners.

See our stereogram training set gallery.

Recommend stereogram configuration:

  • Stereogram type – diverging/parallel SIS type (textured stereograms)
  • Content – use simple 3D object or 3D depth map without small details and without large plain shapes, try to avoid content with near min 3D depth and max 3D depth
  • 3D Depth – use medium size of 3D depth, small depth is not the best for beginners, high depth is recommended for trained eyes and may burdens the eyes
  • Separation – use separation in average values, think of the medium on which the image will be displayed (display or paper), stereogram printed on paper in high resolution need different separation value as displayed on monitor display
  • Texture – use high contract texture with small elements, don’t forget about color-blind people
  • Anti-aliasing (Stereogram Explorer specific) – enable anti-aliasing  (from 4 to 8)
